Nelson helps defeat NRA gun amendment
Sen. Bill Nelson sided with Democrats today in defeating an amendment to a defense spending bill that would have allowed licensed gun owners to carry concealed weapons across state lines.
Florida's Republican Sen. Mel Martinez backed the measure, which was sponsored by John Thune, R-S.D.
The vote was close. Under an agreement reached this week, 60 senators needed to support but only 58 did. But that included 20 Democrats, so Nelson's "no" vote was not insignificant. It was a rare defeat for the National Rifle Association.
