Nelson, Lieberman, and celebrity politicos

Seeing as CT Sen. Joe Lieberman is practically an honorary Floridian, raising buckets of money from South Florida and campaigning here endlessly in the 2000 presidential election, we checked in with his tough Democratic primary against Democrat Ned Lamont this week. Frankly it wound up making us a tad nostalgic, after it became clear sitting down with Lamont that he mainly wanted to hear about Jeb Bush and Katherine Harris. That's not at all unusual outside the Sunshine state.

Sigh. It reminded us that, barring a stunning turnaround by Harris, Florida's biggest political celebrities are about to step out of the spotlight soon. At least right now nobody outside Florida (and not too many inside) care much about the Charlies, Toms, Jims, Rods of the political scene.

Meanwhile, Sen. Bill Nelson made it clear he's steering clear of the CT race, where Lieberman is talking about running as an independent candidate should he lose the primary. Said Nelson: "Joe Lieberman is a personal friend of mine and one of the finest senators in the U.S. Senate. I'm engaged in my own race in florida and I won't be involved in the connecticut senate race."
