Nelson wants Big Oil investigation after explosion

A4s_oilfire042310_118543c Sen. Bill Nelson has asked the Interior Department to research and report on oil drilling accidents after a rig explosion this week in the Gulf of Mexico. “The tragedy off the coast of Louisiana shows we need to be asking a lot more tough questions of Big Oil,” the Florida Democrat said today. (request letter is here.)

The spill is currently is about 150 miles southwest of Pensacola, and officials said no new oil is leaking from the well head on the Gulf floor.

Nelson acknowledged the resulting spill will not threaten Florida's beaches but it still stoked fears among critics of President Obama's plan to expand offshore drilling in the Gulf. Obama wants to allow rigs 125 miles off the Florida coast; state Republicans would go much closer.
