New ethics bill targets deadbeat pols
Two Democratic legislators have filed bills that would take aim at elected and appointed officials who have refused to pay fines owed to state agencies. The bills are HB 817 and SB 252.
Sen. Nan Rich, D-Weston, and Rep. Scott Randolph, D-Orlando, are sponsoring bills that would withhold salary payments from elected officials until thei pay their penalties to the state. "When elected officials break the rules, they should be held to the same standard as any other citizen," Randolph said in a statement.
News reports have cited $1.4 million being owed to the state for outstanding fines and penalties, most of it owed to the Florida Elections Commission and the Commission on Ethics.
