No Florida travel plans for Thompson?
Fred Thompson placed a disappointing third in South Carolina, his make-or-break state, and then gave an ambiguous speech Saturday night that left supporters wondering about his next move.
Top Florida organizers dialed Thompson staffers first thing Sunday asking if they still had a candidate. Thompson, unlike all the other leading Republicans, has yet to announce travel plans to the Sunshine State. Campaign staffers promise it's coming soon.
Local organizer Bill Bunting, the Pasco County GOP chairman, wasn't giving up the fight. He passed out Thompson literature and bumper stickers at a gun show Sunday morning. When a reporter called, he continually put Thompson fans on the phone as they signed up for the National Rifle Association.
One woman, conveying the sentiment of most, said she wanted Thompson to stay in the race. "He's got the best ideas," she said, not giving her name. "If he drops out, I hope someone else picks them up."
