Obama coming to Jax, Miami
In addition to raising money in Coral Gables on Friday, Barack Obama is planning public campaign events in Miami and on Saturday in Jacksonville. Meanwhile, Florida campaign manager Steve Schale and Josh Earnest, deputy communications director for the national campaign, held a conference call this afternoon to tout the competitiveness of Florida.
Earnest noted that Obama attracted 6,000 people today in a GOP stronghold in Colorado and John McCain attracted 3,000 at the GOP stronghold of Jacksonville as evidence of a "historic enthusiasm gap." He said "the last few days of this campaign will be waged on our turf -- on the notion of change and which ticket will be most effective in bringing the change we need in Washington, D.C."
Schale said polls showing McCain gaining a few points were taken during the afterglow of the GOP convention: "Given all the empirical evidence to date and with all the enthusiasm on the ground, there isn't any reason to believe Florida isn't going to be a dead heat going from here forward."
