Obama Democrats get out the vote

July

Democratic activists are targeting voters using the same grassroots strategy that helped elect President Barack Obama.

Organizing for America, the volunteer network that succeeded Obama's campaign effort, will host events across the state Saturday to urge voters who cast their first ballot in 2008 to return to the polls this year. The goal is to keep Florida blue for the midterm elections.

"It is actually very hard work to keep voters involved in their government," said Betty Dimaio, a Fort Lauderdale volunteer who plans to call voters Saturday to sell Democratic candidates.

At stake is the Democrat’s majority rule in Congress.

"This is going to be an election that is really going to give people a choice whether they want to continue to move the country forward in a positive direction," said Congressman Ted Deutch.

Deutch, who is supporting Kendrick Meek in the U.S. Senate Democratic primary, would not say whether he would back Jeff Greene, Meek's rival, if Greene wins the party's nomination.
