Offshore drilling could damage McCain in FL
Is John McCain's new stance on offshore drilling a sign of his confidence in Florida? No one we know of has ever won a statewide Florida election without supporting a moratorium on offshore drilling, and this is just the latest key Florida issue - national cat fund, Everglades restoration/funding, private Social Security accounts - where McCain is vulnerable to attack.
If you doubt the volatility of the issue, flash back to 04 when John Kerry gave an ambiguous answer about drilling while standing on on the shore of Hillsborough Bay: "...(Jeb) Bush, who has been at odds with his brother on the issue, pounced like a wildcatter on a new geyser. Referring to "Kerry's insistence on offshore drilling in Florida," Bush said, "There is probably 10 percent of the people of this state that would support a candidate for higher office that believes what John Kerry believes."
UPDATE: Or not. Charlie Crist has pretty good instincts, after all, and he's embracing McCain's stance. Back in the good ole days when gas was $3-per gallon...
Our poll found Florida voters 46% of Florida voters supported lifting the moratorium and 42% opposed it.
