Offshore drilling push worries Sen. Bill Nelson
Florida Sen. Bill Nelson and nine other coastal state lawmakers are alarmed about an aggressive push by offshore oil drilling interests to win "unfettered" access under the pending energy and climate bill.
"This is of great concern to us," Nelson and the other senators wrote to the architects of the legislation: Sens. John Kerry, Lindsay Graham and Joe Lieberman.
The letter cites concern about military training in the Gulf of Mexico and a damaged coastal economy as well as a study saying more drilling will not lower the price of gas.
"We hope that as you forge legislation, you are mindful that we cannot support legislation that will mitigate one risk only to put our coasts at greater peril from another source," the letter reads. (Check it out here.)
