PBA sues Gov. Scott to block prison privatization

Yet another lawsuit targeting Gov. Rick Scott's administration: The Florida Police Benevolent Association (PBA) has filed suit in circuit court in Tallahassee, seeking to block the Department of Corrections from implementing a massive privatization of prisons in 18 counties, including Miami-Dade. The PBA plans to hold a news conference in Miami Wednesday to explain the action it is taking.

The privatization venture was not the idea of Scott or his prisons chief, Edwin Buss -- it sprang from the Florida Legislature as a cost-saving measure. As the PBA claims in its advisory on the news conference, the change was dropped into the state budget with "no independent professional testimony and zero public input."

Prison staffers have begun work on a request for proposals from private prison operators.
