Permitted concealed firearms would be allowed in Tampa's GOP convention protest zone
If Tampa's proposed rules for the Republican National Convention are passed, protesters could not bring a squirt gun into the city's designated protest zone.
But they could bring in a real gun if they had a concealed weapons permit.
That's because state law does not allow local governments to enact any laws regulating guns, City Attorney Jim Shimberg Jr. said.
"The Legislature says that basically the state is going to occupy that whole field," Shimberg said Monday. "Even if we tried to regulate it, it would be null and void."
