PolitiFact Florida: Fact-checking the Florida Legislature

2

March

With little more than a week to go in the current legislative session, PolitiFact Florida has been busy fact-checking members of the state Legislature. Here's a look at some of our reports from things we heard in Tallahassee. Click the links to find out the ratings and the stories behind the statements.

  • Can Johnny read? "Right now, 50 percent of Florida students leaving high school cannot read at grade level." -- Rep. Bill Proctor, R-St. Augustine
  • Going to the dogs: Florida is "the largest dog-racing state in the country." -- Sen. Maria Sachs, D-Delray Beach
  • Pricing Florida universities: "Florida ranks 45th" in the nation for tuition. -- Rep. Denise Grimsley, R-Sebring
  • Welfare drug-testing: About 800 people refused to get a drug screening because they are "out there on drugs." -- Rep. Paige Kreegel, R-Punta Gorda
