Poll: Gallagher toast, Davis-Smith too close

The Miami Herald, in its Sunday edition, has a new poll out on the race for governor.

Dems: Jim Davis 33.6 percent / Rod Smith 28.7 percent.  Margin of error 4.5 percentage points.

GOP: Charlie Crist 59 percent / Tom Gallagher 29.5 percent.

The Democrats saw it in two entirely different ways. "We've been closing fast. I'd say it's just where we think we needed to be," Smith said. "I couldn't be happier to go from where I was to where I am. Man, it's been a long road.

Davis, though, noted that the gap has remained the same Zogby poll in the Herald three weeks ago. "After how much money has been spent? At least $4-million dollars by a Republican company trying to buy a Democratic campaign for governor. They have failed to alter this particular poll."

The poll, conducted by Zogby International on Aug. 29-31, also asked about the Big Sugar controversy Davis invoked. Potential voters were told Davis has accused Smith of being in the pocket of Big Sugar because sugar interests have put $1-million (the figure has increased dramatically) into anti-Davis attack ads, while Smith said he nobody's pawn. "Whom are you more likely to agree with?" Davis 36.8 percent / Smith 30.6 / neither 11.1 / both 0.9 / undecided 20.5. On Pitts and Lee,  whom more likely to agree with? - Smith 36 / Davis 32. On Davis' missed votes in congress, whom more likely to agree with? - Smith 41.9 /  Davis 34.9.
