Re-schedule Florida's primary? Nah
With a special session looming, maybe Florida lawmakers should move Florida's Jan. 29 primary earlier, to beat out the South Carolina GOP primary set for 1/19? Not going to happen, say state GOP leaders, who are perfectly happy with Florida's position - especially since early voting Floridians can cast their votes two weeks before Jan. 29 anyway.
"I don't view this as a competition between states. I just think Florida's issues should be addressed early on and they're going to be,'' said state House Speaker Marco Rubio, the brainchild behind Florida's early primary. "Florida's mportance in the primary isn't just the date of the vote. It's the diversity of our state, it's the fact that the issues you face in Florida are national in scope, it's the fact that Florida's a pretty good barometer of your national appeal and of your ability to win the swing states.''
BTW, so far Democrats in Iowa and South Carolina are sticking with their previously set dates (1/14 and 1/29), while Democrats in New Hampshire stand to face the same DNC penalties as Florida is NH moves its primary earlier. But New Hampshire has just 30 delegates compared to more than 200 for Florida Democrats.
