Rep. Dennis Ross now OK with Boehner bill
Rep. Dennis Ross of Lakeland, one of the few Florida holdouts on the Boehner debt bill, is now board. "Due to the addition of the balanced budget amendment requirement, Mr. Ross is a YES," his chief of staff, Fred Piccolo, tells the Buzz.
The amendment was added today as a way to entice more Republicans to support the bill, which was supposed to be voted on yesterday. At least two other Florida Reps, Steve Southerland of Panama City and Connie Mack of Fort Myers, also opposed the legislation, saying it did not do enough. We'll see what they think of the revisions.
Rep. Tom Rooney, R-Tequesta, said he is also now a firm yes. “A balanced budget amendment is the type of meaningful reform we need to prevent another debt ceiling crisis like we face today," he said.
Even if it passes, the Boehner bill will meet opposition in the Democratic-controlled Senate, where hope is a bipartisan group of lawmakers can come up with an 11th hour deal to avoid a government default on its obligations.
