Rep. Mayfield dies at 52
UPDATE 10/1: Gov. Charlie Crist has ordered flags to be flown at half staff.
Rep. Stan Mayfield, a Vero Beach Republican who was just elected Indian River County tax collector, has died of cancer. He was 52.
"It is with great sadness that I inform you that our friend and colleague has passed away," House Speaker Marco Rubio announced moments ago. "He was surrounded by family and friends. I will notify each of you of funeral arrangements as soon as they are finalized."
Mayfield represented District 80, which includes parts of Brevard, Indian River and St. Lucie counties. He was chairman of the Environmental & Natural Resources Council.
He was a professional engineer and a general contractor. He had owned Mayfield Group Construction of Vero Beach. He is survived by his wife Deborah and sons Evan, Samuel and Coleman.
He was diagnosed with esophageal cancer in March 2007, was treated and returned to office, looking remarkably vibrant. But things turned for the worse recently.
In August, Mayfield beat GOP Chairwoman Carole Jean Jordan in the Republican Party primary to replace Indian River County Tax Collector Charles Sembler. There was no Democrat, so Mayfield was elected.
