Republicans For Davis

Jim Davis got some help today from a few Republicans, who told reporters the Democrat is better positioned to lead the state than Charlie Crist. The Republicans said Crist's plan for property tax relief is inadequate because it affects homesteads only, not businesses or rental property. They also said Davis has a better approach to education problems in Florida.

"I’m sorry I don’t see Charlie Crist's leadership abilities versus Jim Davis'," said Frank Morsani of Tampa, former chairman of the U.S. Chamber of Commerce.

Also on a conference call was Pete Carpenter, former CSX railroad executive, major fundraiser for President Bush and supporter of Gov. Bush. Carpenter, of Jacksonville, said North Florida voters are concerned his party has focused too much on hard-line ideological positions, such as the Terri Schiavo case. "These folks are convinced Jim Davis is not going to be going off on tangents," Carpenter said.

Others include David H. Bludworth, former Fifteenth Judicial Circuit State Attorney and former Republican AG candidate; Charles Commander, Jacksonville attorney; Teresa Gaffney, Hillsborough County attorney; Preston Haskell, Jacksonville business leader; Robert L. Stein, regency group; Dov Sussman, Tampa Bay attorney.
