Rice Is Out

State Rep. and former Pinellas Sheriff Everett Rice is dropping out of the Republican primary for attorney general and won't run for re-election to the House. On the surface, fewer choices in that GOP primary helps Joe Negron compete against Bill McCollum, except that Pinellas is seen as one of McCollum's strongest counties. Said the Rice campaign:

"After reviewing the current release of the candidates' finance reports, Rice believes that "no matter how well qualified I am< i cannot compete with the war chests of the other candidates. The race has been largely ignored by the media, and it is apparent that the only way the public is going to receive information regarding the attorney general race is through each candidate's paid advertising. I don't think this election can be won without sufficient funds to compete with the advertising my opponents will be doing. If I stayed in this race I would end up being a spoiler for one of the other two Republican candidates. That is a role I wouldn't want to play."
