Rick Kriseman, Gwen Margolis file bills that would allow for recall of state lawmakers

Rep. Rick Kriseman, a Democrat from St. Petersburg, and Sen. Gwen Margolis, a Democrat from Miami, have filed bills that would allow Floridians to recall elections of the governor, lieutenant governor, Cabinet members and legislators.

"It's important because the voters, the people of the state of Florida, deserve an opportunity to weigh in on their elected officials and whether they're performing or not performing," Kriseman said.

Isn't that what elections every two or four years are for? Sure, Kriseman said. But sometimes lawmakers behave in such an egregious manner that perhaps voters will want them out before election time, Kriseman said.  And there's no way their colleagues will take action in those cases.

"The people deserve an opportunity to say, 'You know what, this man or woman shouldn't be serving anymore.' That's what this is about," Kriseman said. "I think what you'll see if that risk is out there, it will change behaviors. There's a possibility that somebody who otherwise might be able to stay where they're at for four years and people forget it about, won't be able to do that anymore."
