Robert Wexler's looming endorsement of Charlie Crist
Longtime speculation that former Democratic U.S. Rep. Robert Wexler would endorse his pal from his days in Tallahassee, Gov. Charlie Crist, over Democratic Senate nominee Kendrick Meek, is ramping up.
In his appearance today at the at the Century Village retirement community in Pembroke Pines, Crist immediately singled out one resident -- Wexler's dad, Sonny Wexler. Crist talked about his close relationship with his son, their service together in the Florida Legislature, and the fact that they went to Israel together on his first trip abroad as governor.Crist also worked with the former congressman on one of the issues closest to Wexler's heart -- getting rid of the paper-trail-free electronic voting machines.
Wexler has been keeping a low political profile in Florida since he left Congress to head the S. Daniel Abraham Center for Middle East Peace. The ideal homecoming? Accompanying Crist to his scheduled appearances Sunday in Kings Point in Tamarac and Century Village in Boca Raton in his old congressional district.
The Crist campaign would not confirm that Wexler will be there Sunday, but an endorsement from the self-described "fire-breathing liberal" would be undeniably helpful to a candidate whose Democratic support has been slipping in recent polls.
