Rod on Canceled Debate
On his first campaign stop at Granny Cantrell's Whistle Stop Cafe, Smith defended his campaign's choice to bypass a debate that NBC had been trying to reschedule for tonight. The Tuesday debates were postponed due to the tropical storm.
"We had canceled three televised debates, because he was unavailable," Smith said, referring to Jim Davis. Smith said he was skeptical about viewership on a Friday night and then when he heard that Miami and Broward county NBC stations wouldn't carry it until sometime later, he said he decided that it was more important to motivate voters with his statewide tour.
"When we were asking for earlier debates, one of the things we were saying is if it gets to the end, what if something goes wrong and we can't get it done. Well, guess what. We were ready to debate them earlier this week. But we have to push to get out the vote this weekend, we've got to motivate our voters and get folks excited."
"We've done all the TV we can do," Smith said. "You can't turn the TV on without hearing that I'm a great man or I'm going to prison."
