Rod to Jim: Where ya at?

First Gov. Bush made an issue of Jim Davis' congressional voting history, now Democratic challenger Rod Smith is too. His Web site notes Davis did not vote with other House members Thursday on whether to cut the estate tax. "The issue not withstanding, it is a shame that the 640,000 Floridians that Congress Davis promised to represent did not have a voice on the issue. Was he campaigning? Was he sick? Does he have a note from his doctor?" In all, Davis missed 11 votes that day. He was in Orlando, along with Smith, for a candidate forum.

At another forum Saturday, Davis was asked if he had any second thoughts about his missed votes. No, he replied. "I am doing my best to balance both jobs. ... Every day is a judgment call," he said, noting that he has tried to miss only votes that were foregone conclusions.

Smith's campaign has acknowledged he missed four votes during this year's legislative session. But it is quick to assert that with hundreds of votes, that is a sterling track record.
