Romney, on heels over illegal immigration, drags Florida into debate
One of the sharpest exchanges in Tuesday's debate was between Rick Perry and Mitt Romney, when Perry revised a story from the 2008 campaign that his rival employed a grounds keeping crew that hired illegal immigrants. Reeling, Romney took at shot at Texas, saying the state saw a 60 percent increase in illegal immigrants over the past decade while Florida and California saw no increase.
That's close but not entirely correct. (more here from Politifact). The numbers did drop in Florida. In 2000, according to the Department of Homeland Security, there were 800,000 illegal immigrants in Florida. In 2006, there were 960,000. But by 2010, it was down to 760,000.
