Ron Paul to visit Orlando next weekend
Ron Paul will appear at the Florida Liberty Summit in Orlando on Aug. 19 and 20, his first appearance in Florida since entering the GOP primary for president.
Paul was invited because he is a past chair of the Campaign For Liberty, which grew out of his 2008 run for president. The nonprofit group emphasized that Paul was not making a campaign stop. But the appearance could test the level of enthusiasm for Paul, who is hoping for Top 3 showing in this weekend's straw poll in Ames, Iowa.
He still faces very long odds but is a more credible candidate than 2008, with the issues he talked about back then (federal spending/debt) now front and center. A Quinnipiac University poll last week had Paul at 9 percent in Florida, behind Mitt Romney (23) and Rick Perry (13) but ahead of Herman Cain (8) Michele Bachmann (6) Newt Gingrich (4) Tim Pawlenty (3) and John Huntsman (1).
