Rubio aces his speech -- and then takes a sip

Sen. Marco Rubio was acing his State of the Union speech until he very awkwardly reached out of camera view, grabbed a bottle of Poland Spring (eyes still fixed on camera) and took a sip. Twitter lit up with jokes.

Still, Rubio's speech was well received by Republicans. "I think it makes him a bigger national figure," Newt Gingrich said on CNN.

"Rubio was terrific," Ralph Reed tweeted. "Not just a rebuttal, but casting a positive vision for the future. Well done."

Jennifer Rubin, a conservative blogger for the Washington Post, said Rubio "did not disappoint tonight, showing a fresher face and more dynamic brand of conservatism –- presented by a fresher and more dynamic face. He appeared relaxed and jovial throughout, hardly the stereotype of the angry Republican. Standing in front of the window was a helpful  framing — making him “fill up” the screen, if you will. As a TV communicator he did the best job of any State of the Union respondent I can recall. His delivery was briefly marred by grabbing for a swig of water, which depending on your view was either a “real moment” or a rookie error."

Poking fun at himself later, Rubio tweeted, "#GOPResponse #SOTU #gop #tcot" and included a photo of the bottle.
