Rubio applauds tax support but wants more

House Speaker Marco Rubio on the property tax coalition:

"I applaud Gov. Crist's leadership on passage of Amendment 1. His involvement will make the difference between its success or failure. Amendment 1 represents the single largest tax cut in Florida's history. It will make our property tax system fairer and more affordable than it is now. I will assist the Governor and Sen. Fasano in any way I can to insure passage of the amendment.

However, regardless of the outcome on January 29, I firmly believe that we must continue working to provide additional opportunities to reduce and eliminate property taxes in Florida.

We should abolish the homestead property tax. It is an inherently an unfair and inherently unaffordable tax. We also need to do more for owners of commercial property, rental housing and second homes.

As this year's tax bills prove, the property tax crisis in Florida has not ended. And even if this amendment passes there will still be countless Floridians whose property taxes remain unaffordable.

Those who oppose the amendment should know that if the amendment fails in January it will not be because it goes too far. It will be because for many Floridians, it doesn't go far enough."
