Rubio, like Obama once was, hailed on Nightline as the 'next big thing'

rubionightline.jpgNightline gave the feature treatment to Sen. Marco Rubio tonight, heralding the Florida Republican as "the biggest Republican star in Congress," and making an immediate comparison to another "young, attractive Capitol Hill newcomer" -- Barack Obama.

The spot showed Rubio in his temporary, windowless basement office, getting lost in the Capitol (Hello Cleveland!) and showing off the Nicki Minaj on his iPhone. "I'll probably hurt her record sales," he joked.

The piece touched on Rubio's Cuban roots and his father's bartending job in Las Vegas. It showed Rubio as charming and personable and a faithful conservative. But the network strained the storyline by suggesting Rubio is a rebel willing to "irritate party leadership," noting his vote against the recent stopgap budget deal. Rubio was not alone in doing so.

UPDATE: Wednesday morning Rubio appeared on Good Morning America and was asked about Libya and other issues. See video below.
