Rumbling for a cause
Who needs business suits? Hordes of bikers cruised the halls of the Senate and House this morning, trying to talk with lawmakers about some concerns, including a bill that would ban the use of cell phones while driving. Motorcyclists say the legislation does not go far enough and include BlackBerry and other distracting devices. "I'd rather have someone talking than sending a text message," said Tom Nugent, 61, of Orange Park, who wore a leather jacket and chaps on his way to see Sen. Jim King.
The bikers are Florida members of ABATE, American Bikers Aiming Toward Education. Among its agenda: mandatory driver's ed for teens, with attention to motorcycle awareness. But like the cell phone bill, the issue has not advanced this session.
