Scott boots UF Board of Trustees chair

Carlos Alfonso, a Tampa architect who has served on the University of Florida Board of Trustees for over 10 years, is stepping down from his post after not receiving a reappointment from Gov. Rick Scott.

The move was unexpected, with Alfonso appointed chair of the board just last year.

But Alfonso had only good words for UF, in a statement released late Friday afternoon:

During my tenure, we have achieved great things for the university, and my service has also brought me much personal satisfaction. UF has an incredible faculty, amazingly loyal and active alumni and some of the country’s highest-caliber students. With the support of these groups, and under President Machen’s leadership, we have greatly advanced the university since the Board of Trustees was created in 2001.

We won tuition flexibility, expanded Internet-based distance learning, grew our research enterprise, enhanced our global presence and increased access to students from all walks of life. We achieved these and many other advances during difficult economic times, and while continuing our commitment to Florida by enrolling students composed of 95-percent in-state residents – and operating with the lowest tuition of any member of the Association of American Universities.

My love of and pride for everything the Gator Nation represents has grown over these years. I began my service by stating I was an advocate for the students, and I hope to be remembered for that advocacy.

I recently decided that after a decade of service, now might be the right time for new board membership and therefore, I will end my service on Monday, April 23rd, by withdrawing my application.

I will always be a proud member of the Gator Nation. My time spent in this role as a member of the Board will always be special to me. This was truly the finest, most unselfish group of men and women with whom I have ever served.

I am grateful to Governor Jeb Bush, who originally appointed me, for his educational leadership and his results – which framed my entire term of service – and to Governor Rick Scott, for allowing me to continue to serve. I want to thank past board members and those who remain behind to carry forward the global reputation and great opportunities that will arise for the University of Florida and our great state.

Go Gators!

UF President Bernie Machen had kind words, as well:

As a founding member of the University of Florida Board of Trustees, Carlos Alfonso has provided superb leadership for the university for 11 years. He was instrumental in many of the university’s greatest achievements during that period, including our increased tuition flexibility, significant progress in innovation and the rapid growth of our campus research infrastructure. His can-do attitude and abilities have helped us through the most turbulent economic times in a generation, and his knowledge of the state and its residents has been extremely valuable to my leadership. The University of Florida never had a greater ally or supporter, and I wish Mr. Alfonso every success in his future endeavors.
