Scott's early-morning speech to supporters
Throughout Election Night, Rick Scott's supporters kept looking skyward to the top floor of a Fort Lauderdale hotel. That's where the Republican candidate, family and close friends watched returns and waited for Democrat Alex Sink, or for a major news organization to declare Scott the winner. But neither happened. Despite their frustration, Scott supporters stayed at the hotel pool patio, and Scott, his family and running mate Jennifer Carroll finally did emerge around 2:10 in the morning.
"From the bottom of my heart, thank each of you for all you've done in this campaign," Scott said, with his wife Ann standing at his right. "This is absolutely the most inspiring thing I've ever done in my entire life. As Jennifer Carroll and I have traveled this state, we have met the most wonderful people. People that have struggled; people who have had success; and we are just so grateful for all the support we've received in this campaign. So I apologize that this has taken so long. I'm glad it didn't rain. Maybe it did, I sat upstairs quite a while, watching the news."
"So thanks for your patience and let me tell you some good news. Based on the numbers we're seeing now, after all the votes are counted, I am absolutely confident I will be the next great governor of Florida, and Jennifer Carroll will be the next great governor of the state of Florida." Then, catching his mistake, Scott quickly added: "Lieutenant governor. I already demoted myself. Jennifer always said this was a partnership. She's brainwashed me."
