Sen. George LeMieux suggests special session on drilling not needed
Sen. George LeMieux left the impression today he agrees with other Republicans that Gov. Charlie Crist's proposed constitutional amendment banning oil drilling in Florida waters is unnecessary because the protection is already in state law.
"I'll leave that to our friends in the state," LeMieux demurred when asked about the special session. "The No. 1 thing I'm focused on is stopping the oil from leaking and getting skimmers off our coast ..."
But when pressed, he said, "Well, it's illegal now." LeMieux, in his pre-senate days, advised a oil-industry group that was trying to push a bill through the Legislature to undo that law. That effort, Crist and others say, is exactly why an amendment is needed.
