Sen. Paula Dockery to file for governor Tuesday
State Sen. Paula Dockery, a Lakeland Republican, confirms she will file papers Tuesday to enter the race for governor in 2010. "I'm filing tomorrow," she said in a late-night e-mail message Monday.
Dockery, 48, a legislator since 1996, has the potential to be a game-changing candidate, disrupting Attorney General Bill McCollum's plans to coast to the nomination. She has gained a reputation as a maverick, largely through her determination to derail a massive commuter rail project in Central Florida in the 2009 regular session of the Legislature.
Dockery's candidacy will force McCollum to divert his attention from his Democratic opponent, Chief Financial Officer Alex Sink, to deal with the opposition within his own party.
