Senate committee confirms Scott's DEP head, Herschel Vinyard

With little fanfare, and a handful of gushing compliments, the Senate Environmental and Conservation Committee gave unanimous approval to Herschel Vinyard as secretary of the Department of Environmental Protection.

Sen. Dennis Jones said he was the right person to move on the goal of streamlining regulations at the environmental oversight agency. Sen. Steve Oelrich asked him what he liked to do besides work.

Vinyard responded: "I love fishing. I love hunting…If you come by my house, you will find me mowing my own lawn."

Vinyard was hired by Scott from BAE Systems Southeast Shipyards, where he was director of business operations. The company has shipyards in Jacksonville, Mayport and Mobile, Ala.

Vinyard was a member of Scott's transition team for economic development issues and was appointed to the Jacksonville Port Authority in 2008 by Jacksonville Mayor John Peyton. Before joing Atlantic Marine, he a shareholder at Smith, Husley & Busley from 1990-1999.
