Senate defeats 'Buffett Rule' as Nelson, Rubio go party line

The Senate this evening defeated the Democrats' proposed "Buffett Rule" to raise taxes on the wealthy. The vote, which was expected, was 51-45 not to invoke cloture and cut off debate.

Florida Sen. Bill Nelson, a Democrat, was in favor of the rule; Republican Sen. Marco Rubio was opposed. It never had a chance of passing but Democrats hope it gives them an election year talking point, which was quickly offered by President Obama.

"Tonight, Senate Republicans voted to block the Buffett Rule, choosing once again to protect tax breaks for the wealthiest few Americans at the expense of the middle class," Obama said. (more on the legislation here)
