Senate passes insurance package
The Florida Senate passed the insurance package that was the result of hearings that Sen. Jeff Atwater and Sen. Steve Geller conducted earlier this month.
"This is an important bill, and I think, frankly, one of the most important bills you’ll consider this session," Atwater said.
The vote was 32-to-7 in favor of the bill.
Republican Senators J.D. Alexander, Paula Dockery, Steve Oelrich voting against it. Democratic Senators Tony Hill, Al Lawson, Jeremy Ring and Gary Siplin also voted against it.
There's no House companion. But Buzz hears that Rep. Dennis Ross has been appointed the House's chief negotiator on some sort of compromise legislation.
Ross was one of two House members who voted against the Legislature's much touted 2007 insurance reform package that aimed to force rate cuts by increasing the amount of cheap public reinsurance the state sells to private insurers, putting more of the risk for paying for hurricanes on the state's shoulders.
