Senator's amendment: Fine employers over undocumented employees
Add another amendment to the ones under consideration for SB 2040, the immigration bill under consideration now in the Florida Senate.
Sen. John Thrasher, R-St. Augustine, is proposing requiring every state agency -- and not just workforce agencies -- use the federal government's e-Verify system.
It would also fine employers who after July 1, 2012, hire an undocumented immigrant if the employer did not use e-Verify or rely on a state workforce agency that used e-Verify. The first fine would be up to $500 per undocumented employee, the second up to $1,000 and subsequent fines up to $1,500.
The change would give employers an incentive to check employees' immigration status, Thrasher said.
"We're simply saying if you want to use it, it's out there," he said.
