Sharpe out of Congressional race for good
Republican Mark Sharpe suspended his bid to challenge U.S. Rep. Kathy Castor, D-Tampa, in February, citing new district boundaries that make it nearly impossible for him to have a shot and the unlikelihood they'll change. With campaign season shortening, Sharpe confirmed he is officially calling it quits.
Sharpe, a Hillsborough County commissioner with two years left in his term, says he'll start refunding contributions to his District 11 Congressional campaign account in the coming days with a goal of having checks sent out by May 1.
"It's just a function of time and the reality that the maps are likely to stay where they are," Sharpe said. "I've got to focus my attention on the job I have."
