Sheriff-turned-senator will address campus security in wake of Va. Tech

17

April

Sen. Steve Oelrich, longtime former sheriff in the county that houses Florida's largest university, will dedicate the last meeting of his higher education committee to a discussion of campus security - specifically, he wants to know each public university's strategy for dealing with a mass shooting like the one that killed more than 30 at Virginia Tech on Monday morning.

Oelrich, former Alachua County sheriff, said he will invite university presidents and their campus security heads to his committee meeting April 24, the last before session ends.

"What I don't want to see on the campuses of Florida is cops standing behind trees while the shooter is shooting, and then we wave a flag and say OK now it's safe to go in," said Oelrich, R-Gainesville. "That is not acceptable."
