Should lawmakers ban school board salaries?
School board members are not getting much love this year from state lawmakers.
In addition to extensive education reforms and stinging classroom budget cuts, the Florida Legislature is contemplating tightening gift restrictions to board members and their relatives — and doing away with board members’ salaries altogether.
The move comes on the heels of a blistering statewide grand jury report detailing widespread corruption in the Broward school district, where in less than two years a pair of board members has been indicted separately on corruption charges. Former member Beverly Gallagher is serving a three-year sentence in federal prison; Stephanie Kraft has pleaded not guilty in a pending state case.
Broward board members were the highest paid in the state last school year, with annual salaries of $39,000. Full story here.
