Sink takes on the Tribune
The Tampa Tribune's endorsement of Republican Tom Lee for chief financial officer has prompted Democrat Alex Sink to respond in kind. Her campaign is urging supporters to write letters to the editor of the Tribune, "saying that Alex Sink is the better choice." It's an organized effort to generate a sense of grass-roots outrage over the paper's choice.
"This is our opportunity to fight back," says the memo from Sink's outreach director, Anne Thal. The letter emphasizes that writers should "refrain from saying anything negative about the Tribune" but focus on Sink's qualifications to hold the Cabinet post and to note that Lee sided with insurance companies last session and "ignored the insurance crisis we all knew was coming."
The Trib's support of Lee is significant because both CFO candidates are from Hillsborough in the heart of the paper's circulation base. Conventional wisdom suggests that such recommendations matter more in a down-ballot race that is not attracting as much public or media attention as it should.
Oh, yes: "Your letters must be 150 words or less."
