Smith: Attack Ad Crosses Line
Rod Smith issued a statement today saying that a mail ad that attacks Davis for voting against compensation for Freddie Pitts and Wilbert Lee goes "too far" by implying that Davis' overall record on racial matters is one of "shame."
Smith tries to distance himself from mailer in the statement, although his campaign did confirm that they provided a picture of Smith for the mailer on condition that it not be a personal attack or inaccurate.
"This piece, by an outside group, may have satisfied the letter of that insistence but is needlessly inflammatory. Congressman Davis made a bad vote on compensation for Mr. Pitts and Mr. Lee, and that's a legitimate topic for criticism. However, to characterize his overall record as shameful to people of color is excessive. There are plainly those who have profound political differences with Congressman Davis and they have a right to express those differences. But it is my hope that they practice restraint from overstatement and remain focused on his public record."
