Smith: More Renewable Energy
On the same day that California Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger and British Prime Minister Tony Blair announced that California would start cutting its greenhouse gases, Democratic candidate for governor Rod Smith offered up his plan for Florida.
Smith would require utilities to increase their use renewable energy sources, like wind, solar and biomass over oil, gas and coal, by an average of one percent each year until 2025. Florida's utilities currently only use about one percent of renewable energy sources.
This measure is stronger but not unlike language Smith got added into the energy bill that the legislature passed and Gov. Jeb Bush signed into law.
Democratic challenger Jim Davis also believes in increasing renewable energy sources but doesn't have a specific plan yet, a Davis spokesman said.
