Storm Clouds Over Senate Race
Republican Ronda Storms is considered a favorite to win a solidly-Republican east Hillsborough Senate seat in four weeks. But a new poll by The Kitchens Group of Maitland offers a ray of hope to Storms' Democratic opponent, Stephen Gorham. The poll, which was taken right after the Sept. 5 primary, shows Gorham at 40 percent and Storms at 38 percent and 22 percent undecided.
The telephone survey (400 likely voters, Sept. 8-10, MOE +/-4.9 percentage points) says Storms suffered from the attacks by her Republican opponents in last month's primary, and while she has overwhelmingly high name ID, she also has high negatives -- suggesting that most people have in their minds a fixed opinion of whether they like her or not. Gorham's big challenge, says pollster Jim Kitchens, is raising enough money to get his message out.
CORRECTION: An earlier posting of this item said the Kitchens poll was commissioned by the Academy of Florida Trial Lawyers. It was not. AFTL is neutral in the Storms-Gorham race, said Jacqui Sisto, a spokeswoman for the trial lawyers. Kitchens is a pollster for Senate Victory, a political committee supporting Democratic Senate candidates.
