Sugar deal is done, say state officials

Negotiations between the South Florida Water Management District and U.S. Sugar to buy 181,000 acres of the company's land for Everglades restoration "have concluded," the water district announced this afternoon. The full details of the deal will be posted online shortly.

If the U.S. Sugar board approves the deal the water district board will vote on whether to approve it during a Dec. 15-16 meeting in West Palm Beach.

Among the unanswered questions: What happened to that rival offer from the Lawrence Group? And is the land really worth what U.S. Sugar wants? Here's a fact sheet on what's known so far.
