Sunday Editorials: Three for Crist, Two for Davis

On Sunday's editorial pages in Florida, Republican Charlie Crist collected the endorsements of The South Florida Sun-Sentinel, Florida Times-Union in Jacksonville and Tallahassee Democrat, while Democrat Jim Davis was endorsed by The Gainesville Sun and St. Petersburg Times.

The Sun views Crist as an unacceptable continuation of what it calls "Jebocracy." Davis, the paper says, is "well prepared" and "thoughtful" and has an impressive record on the environment. "In education," the Sun says, "Davis wants to stop using the FCAT in blunt instrument fashion to reward some schools and punish others."

"It isn't a difficult decision," the T-U writes. "Crist would continue Bush's policies. Davis would dismantle most of them. Crist is the better choice. The paper calls Crist "a man of depth, vision and principle."

The Democrat cited Crist's "undisputed reputation as a very decent man and good judge of character." The paper says Crist's support for the class size amendment, stem cell research, gay civil unions and automatic restorations of civil rights for felons show "that he does his own thinking and is confident that genuine sincerity if a powerfully persuasive weapon."

The Sun-Sentinel didn't sound very impressed with the choices for governor, but its editorial says "Crist has good ideas. He also has a track record of working with others ... His biggest challenge may very well be to stick with the pragmatic and sensible successes (he) has shown as attorney general and shy away from some of the shtick he's now offering as a candidate."
