Tampa City Council opposes proposed USF cuts

TAMPA -- The Tampa City Council Thursday joined the chorus of protests against proposed legislative cuts to the budget for the University of South Florida, voting unanimously to send a letter of protest to the Legislature and governor.

"The city of Tampa needs a university like USF," said Council member Mike Suarez, who made the motion. "We cannot allow a vendetta against our city and our universities to go unanswered."

Calling USF a cultural asset and economic engine, Council member Yvonne Yolie Capin said, "it is under siege, and we need to protect it."

"We have to rise up as a community and contact everyone," said Council member Lisa Montelione, who noted that USF is Hillsborough County's third-largest employer behind the Hillsborough County school district and MacDill Air Force Base.
