'A tax scam our schools can't afford'

10

January

So claims a new mailer by Florida Is Our Home, the coalition of teachers, firefighters and others fighting the property tax cut plan on the Jan. 29 ballot.

The cover asks, Where will Amendment 1 put Florida schools? Opening it reveals the answer: Dead Last.

School funding is indeed threatened by the proposal (though lawmakers have pledged to make up the difference) but not by the $3-billion the mailer claims. State economists have downgraded the school cuts to $1.5-billion over five years, in part because fewer people are expected to move and take advantage of Save Our Homes portability.

Something else that may be devastating to education: The use of cell phones in class.
