TaxWatch ID's $60.6M in budget 'turkeys'
Florida TaxWatch has identified 41 projects worth $60.6 million that is says bypassed the normal budgeting process. Although the total is about four times as much as last year, it's historically low compared to years when lawmakers appropriated between $200 million and $300 million on turkeys.
Because the figure is a small fraction of total state spending, some of questioned whether the exercise is "worth the squeeze."
"This year, every million dollars was worth the squeeze," said TaxWatch president Dominic Calabro.
Almost half of the list is taken up by three items: two $10 million transportation projects for various counties that are not on the DOT work plan, as well as $8.5 million for an FAMU-Crestview Center. Miami-Dade (home county of House budget chief David Rivera, who's running for Congress) scored the top number of projects, with a dozen.
