Thrasher: Crist 'a joke, a cartoon character at best'

29

August

Former Republican Gov. Charlie Crist, who endorsed President Barack Obama's re-election Sunday, says he has no plans to run for governor as a Democrat in 2014.

That's too bad, says Republican Sen. John Thrasher of St. Augustine. A former state Republican Party chairman who permanently broke with Crist in 2009, Thrasher says a Crist-for-governor candidacy would "incredibly" energize the Florida GOP base to oppose Crist -- ensuring Republican Rick Scott's re-election (if Crist were the Democratic nominee).

"He's a joke. He's a cartoon character at best," Thrasher said. "I think Jeb (Bush) said it best: the guy's organizing principle is about himself and nothing else. I think people understand that now. My only hope would be that he would be the Democratic nominee for governor. I hope he does run. Bring him on."

"People have got memories, you know," Thrasher said. "They remember what he did to the Republican Party, and the stuff with (Jim) Greer. I think it would be of enormous benefit to us to have Charlie Crist running for governor, even if he didn't get the nomination. But I hope he does."
