Today in Florida political history: Is there a 'governor' in Chiles' future?

15

July

We thought we would reprint this brief that ran in the Times 22 years ago, on July 15, 1988:

In a year of upheaval in Florida politics, the rumor mill has cranked out another little tidbit: That retiring U.S. Sen. Lawton Chiles, D-Fla., will run for governor in 1990. The rumor started circulating in Tallahassee political circles over the last several weeks. Even U.S. Rep. Buddy MacKay, D-Ocala, said he has heard it.

"I have heard the rumor. I heard it a long time ago. I don't give a lot of credence to it. But if he were to run, I think he'd win," said MacKay, who is running for Chiles' old Senate seat.

But a spokesman for Chiles said Thursday that the veteran senator has "never shown any inclination" to run for another office. Chiles announced he was retiring late last year to return to Florida.

"The only thing that I know of that he's doing in that direction is going back to Florida," said Jack Pridgen, Chiles'' spokesman.

Bud Chiles, the senator's son and a Tallahassee lobbyist, said he heard the rumor about a month ago. "No, there's nothing to that."
